A genuine Vietnam War era U.S. Navy SPHPG-4 flight deck crew helmet. The SPHPG-4 helmet was developed specifically for the flight decks of all US aircraft carriers, this unique bump helmet provides impact protection while using hearing protectors or noise-attenuating headsets in one of the most hostile environments on earth. The SPHPG-4 Flight Deck Helmet has these components: A suspension liner, a front and a back shell assembly, energy-absorbing impact pads & sound protector ear cups and adjustable chin strap. Was made by David Clark Company USA and is dated 1968 in a size 7½. The red colour of the protective shells indicate this helmet would have been used by either an ordnance handler, crash and salvage crew, explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) or firefighter and damage control party.
