A genuine 1969 dated Zippo lighter once owned by a crewman on the U.S.S. Furse (DD-882), the lighter has engraved on the front an image of the ship and the text 'U.S.S. Furse DD 882'. It features the manufacturers machine stamped base that shows the correct period Zippo logo and date markings along with BRADFORD PA and the trademark logo, on the base of the lighter either side of the Zippo logo are three vertical lines and on the other side two vertical lines, this indicates the Zippo lighter was made in 1969. The lighter mechanism also features machine stamped Zippo markings and fits nicely in the case and appears to be in working order.

During the Vietnam War in the U.S.S. Furse conducted operations as plane guard destroyer in support of the USS AMERICA (CVA-66) on Yankee Station in the Gulf of Tonkin and as Search and Rescue (SAR) destroyer on the northern SAR station in the Gulf of Tonkin. During this period, the U.S.S. Furse received hostile fire by NVN shore batteries which resulted in one direct hit on the flight deck of the USS FURSE resulting in superficial damage to the ship.
